Project Description

Further-Valley-Residence-in-the-snow

Nestled in a clearing among scrub oaks and Ponderosa pines, high above the town of Mosier, this home was designed to celebrate its beautiful Columbia River Gorge location. The surrounding landscape and climate transition from rainforest to high desert where strong winds are prevalent. To shield the compact dwelling from the elements, we tucked it into its sloping site and organized the plan under a singular shed roof. The home simultaneously opens up to nature with terraces on either side of the main living area. Depending on wind direction, this feature offers the homeowner access to sheltered outdoor rooms. Views to the adjacent valley, Columbia River Gorge, and Mt Adams beyond are maximized with a full wall of glazing. The material palette is inspired by the natural, rugged conditions of the site. Exposed glulam beams and a wood plank ceiling create a warm, open, and cohesive feeling throughout the home.
