We renovated this 1960s era ranch in Portland’s Sylvan neighborhood, opening the kitchen up to the living and dining room, updating the bathrooms, and adding a new mudroom. We took cues from the original white oak kitchen, using the same species for the plain-front lower cabinets. The contrasting painted upper cabinets reference the style of the home’s original windows and doors. The robust island is designed to look less like a fixture and more like furniture, giving the space a contemporary feel.
