Spring Street Apartments will be situated in the heart of Amherst, Massachusetts. Host to the oldest college consortium in the United States, Amherst has experienced growing demand for a variety of housing types. Spring Street will offer furnished micro-units to graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, researchers, and young professionals seeking convenient and worry-free housing.
The site is proximate to the historic Lower Jeffrey Inn and Amherst College’s South Quad. It also shares a block with 150-year-old Grace Episcopal Church, a circa 1890 town hall, and a Masonic lodge.
Our design for this innovative development will be unmistakably contemporary, yet harmonious with the storied structures surrounding it. The twin gable brick clad building will offer an attractive storefront meant for a café that opens on to a terrace on a raised plinth. We expect the future café tenant and terrace to provide an amenity for residents and to enrich Amherst’s street life.
Inside, the 12-foot wide units incorporate kitchen, laundry, closet space, sleeping, eating, and studying in one compact and efficient plan. This flexibility in tight quarters is achieved through casework that includes a Murphy bed and a retractable table that doubles as both desk and dining table that seats four to six people.
